In the 10th match minute, Ardiles was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Santos Eguen to maneuver through the defense. In the 11th minute Patricio Costa shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Erik Kassentoft saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Ardiles's Donato Venerando managed to work through Venezuela's defense and was going for an easy goal, but he hit the shot with his toe and the ball flew outside the goal. The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Tomas Illescas was the one to do the kick off. Erik Kassentoft made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Tomas Illescas in the 54th minute of play. Jonathan Ferrant took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Santos Eguen, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 61st minute, Camilo Gaos hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The audience was convinced that Donato Venerando's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Jonathan Ferrant was relentless in the 64th minute of the game. Ardiles's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
