With a couple of smart ball manuevers Daniel Zorita in the 13th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Edwin van der Sar saved Manchester United FC from getting behind. Edwin van der Sar took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 15th match minute, Ecuador was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Felix Montes to maneuver through the defense. 16 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Eero Uusipaavalniemi. An unexpectedly hard shot by Daniel Zorita in the 21st minute of play forced Manchester United FC's goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Alfred Laulaja had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 22nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. The supporters of Manchester United FC booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 23 match minutes in a wonderful position. Juan Sebastián Puig didn't get a good kick on the ball. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Edwin van der Sar prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 38th minute, Daniel Zorita made a precise shot to the right of Edwin van der Sar. Manchester United FC's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. When Manchester United FC's Valdemar Kuoppala in the 42nd minute got a chance for a shot 42nd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. Eero Uusipaavalniemi ran over to the corner to take the kick. After having played for 82 minutes, Cristian Sancho managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Cristian Sancho was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. With a little luck, Manchester United FC's Edwin van der Sar got control of the ball when Agustín Saelices tried to sneak it across the goal line. Cristian Sancho's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Edwin van der Sar read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 89th minute of play.
