The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. A collision led to Velez Sarsfield getting a freekick after 2 minutes play. In the 11th minute, Velez Sarsfield's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Kevin Mastache fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post. The Velez Sarsfield fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-1. After 38 played minutes Velez Sarsfield got a freekick which was hit by Ronan Mistral. In the 39th minute of the match Axel Montenegro sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Erwin Huygens skillfully saved the ball. After having played for 40 minutes, Ago Tramp managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Velez Sarsfield's supporters crossed their fingers, but Ago Tramp was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Colombia's zone, Nereo Artaldo stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Pedro Manzanares came out of the goal and Nereo Artaldo tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After 45 minutes, Abram Sarmiento mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Colombia and the Velez Sarsfield players grew even worse after the yellow card. Abram Sarmiento kicked well hit freekick during the 45th minute of the match. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Nereo Artaldo stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Gaston Ávila hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Colombia's Pedro Manzanares proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 54th minute of the match, managed to save Colombia from getting a goal against them. The crowd rose to their feet as Nereo Artaldo kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Pedro Manzanares. That made the score 1-2 in the 57 minute of play. Pedro Manzanares showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ago Tramp, who was totally free with the ball in the 59th minute. Erwin Huygens showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Abram Sarmiento, who was totally free with the ball in the 64th minute. Marcos Pacifico hit a great freekick 66 minutes into the match. Velez Sarsfield's Augusto Cordario was substituted for Nereo Artaldo. Velez Sarsfield made a substitution. Ignacio Berenguer replaced Ago Tramp. The supporters of Colombia booed when Velez Sarsfield was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 68 match minutes in a wonderful position. Velez Sarsfield's Erwin Huygens played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ignacio Mastache in the 73rd minute of play. Erwin Huygens showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Abram Secada in the 75th minute of the match. In the 78th minute of the match Colombia got a corner. Velez Sarsfield's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Kevin Mastache ran over to the corner to take the kick. Colombia's Joshua Garrido was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Erwin Huygens in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Augusto Cordario scored 1-3 in the 82nd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Pedro Manzanares, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Pedro Manzanares was out of position in the 87 minute of play, and Augusto Cordario capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Augusto Cordario really showed his touch with that goal: 1-4. Augusto Cordario recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 90th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 92 minutes into the match, Velez Sarsfield's goal looked a bit too open when Abram Secada came free, but Erwin Huygens reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Velez Sarsfield's Erwin Huygens played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Abram Secada in the 94th minute of play.
