Jaizki Valverde was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Alan Moruga during the 13th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Aysouraguán made a substitution. Samuel Negro replaced Henry Salazar. Alan Moruga hit a great freekick 14 minutes into the match. Rufino Castelao sent away a hard shot on goal in the 30th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After some careless play in the Costa Rica defense, Rufino Castelao kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Benito Sanz. The Costa Rica fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Benito Sanz should have stopped the shot. After some fancy dribbling in the 42nd minute, Ludomir Pionek managed to get in a good position for a shot. Aysouraguán's supporters rose to their feet, but Ludomir Pionek was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Benito Sanz breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Cristo Gabas's late challenge caught a Costa Rica's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Cristo Gabas helped the player get up and apologised. The score stood at 1-1 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

The supporters of Costa Rica booed when Aysouraguán was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 89 match minutes in a wonderful position. Feliberto Abellan didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 93rd minute Abi Russo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Benito Sanz saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Aysouraguán's Jesús Casado managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Hugo Ferrant in the 94 minute of the game. Despite being the better team, Aysouraguán failed to find the winning goal and were forced to settle for a single point.
