The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Paraguay were furious when Raul Venegas was red carded, 27 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. After 27 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Paraguay! 37 minutes into the game, Benê Arósio threw the ball into play from the sideline. Paraguay's Jaime Pardo quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. After having played for 39 minutes, Hector Covarrubias managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Paraguay's supporters crossed their fingers, but Hector Covarrubias was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 40 minutes into the match, Paraguay's goal looked a bit too open when Lino Torres came free, but Jacobo Nores reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Riograndense FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Juan Almeida was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. When Primitivo Escribano came up free with the goalie in the 52nd minute, the Paraguay fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Primitivo Escribano couldn't finish the play. Lino Torres sent away a hard shot on goal in the 59th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Riograndense FC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Paraguay the free kick. Tião Neiva kicked well hit freekick during the 82nd minute of the match. Wellington Sena showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Hector Covarrubias, who was totally free with the ball in the 85th minute. In the 90th minute Lino Torres shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jacobo Nores saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 91 minutes into the match, Riograndense FC's goal looked a bit too open when Marco Romero came free, but Wellington Sena reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Riograndense FC were delighted with the way they had won the match. They had held their defensive line well and made the most of their chances, to claim a victory over Paraguay's much stronger midfield.
