When Cresitobalo Cortes fell near the penalty area in the 2nd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored UNITED's protests and gave Cresitobalo Cortes a yellow card for diving instead. After 3 played minutes UNITED got a freekick which was hit by Cresitobalo Cortes. Jan Oblak made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 7th minute of play. Daniel Zorita blasted a shot towards the goal in the 8th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Jan Oblak having to make a save. Daniel Zorita scored 0-1 in the 9th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Jan Oblak, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. After some careless play in the UNITED defense, Felix Montenegro kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Jan Oblak. The UNITED fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Jan Oblak should have stopped the shot. Jan Oblak made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 16th minute of play. Agustín Saelices fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 17th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jan Oblak having to interfere. UNITED's Jan Oblak played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Diego Mancebo in the 20th minute of play. If Diego Mancebo had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 21st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. UNITED's supporters rose to their feet, but Cresitobalo Cortes was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Julio Vera breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Cresitobalo Cortes scored 1-3 in the 38th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Julio Vera, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Daniel Zorita received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 43rd minute. Jan Oblak tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After the first half Ecuador were leading 1-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.
The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Cresitobalo Cortes stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. The supporters of Ecuador booed when UNITED was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 53 match minutes in a wonderful position. Károly Kolompár didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 55 minutes, Daniel Zorita managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Daniel Zorita was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 60 minutes into the match, UNITED's goal looked a bit too open when Diego Mancebo came free, but Jan Oblak reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 61st minute of the match Ecuador got a corner. UNITED's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 66th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a rather tough play, Ecuador's Camilo Gisbert got a free kick in the 67th minute. 68 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Cresitobalo Cortes came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 82nd minute, Agustín Saelices made a precise shot to the right of Jan Oblak. UNITED's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-4. Diego Mancebo received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Jan Oblak came out and tried to block the shot, but Diego Mancebo slotted it home off the left post making it 1-5 in the 85th minute. Károly Kolompár hit a great freekick 91 minutes into the match. Diego Mancebo received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 92nd minute. Jan Oblak tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Cresitobalo Cortes sent away a hard shot on goal in the 97th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance.
