Palmeiras made a substitution. Bernt Jønsson replaced José Carlos Simões. 52 minutes into the match, Mexico's goal looked a bit too open when Iustin Bungeanu came free, but Dante Lacasa reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lautaro Mancebo got free with Régis de Queirós in the 55th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 59th match minute, Palmeiras was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Luke Clist to maneuver through the defense. Régis de Queirós came out of the goal in the 61st minute to try and stop a shot by Mexico's Joel Gaona. Mexico's supporters crossed their fingers, but Alberto Tafalla was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Régis de Queirós made a fantastic save in the 70th minute, when Lautaro Mancebo sent off a good shot on target. Dante Lacasa showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Tarcisio Reis in the 77th minute of the match. With a little luck, Palmeiras's Régis de Queirós got control of the ball when Lautaro Mancebo tried to sneak it across the goal line. Lautaro Mancebo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 80th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Régis de Queirós having to interfere. Mexico's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
