The referee ignored Costa Rica's protests and gave Alexander Carballo a yellow card for diving instead. In the 30th match minute, Costa Rica was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Alexander Carballo to maneuver through the defense. In the 35th minute, Lautaro Puig made a precise shot to the right of Juliano Brito. Spartak das Kaldas's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. After the first half Costa Rica were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

After 92 minutes of play Costa Rica's Alan Moruga was too eager in his attempt to stop his opponent and brought him down. With that he got his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. Alan Moruga hit a great freekick 93 minutes into the match. Despite being the better team, Spartak das Kaldas failed to find the winning goal and were forced to settle for a single point.
