The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Kleanthis Kostakoglou sent away a hard shot on goal in the 10th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. FC Schalke 04's Trent Cuevas proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 12th minute of the match, managed to save FC Schalke 04 from getting a goal against them. In the 18th minute Kleanthis Kostakoglou shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jacobo Nores saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 23 minutes into the match, FC Schalke 04's František Spousta sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Jacobo Nores narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Jaime Pardo's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Trent Cuevas read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 25th minute of play. Trent Cuevas took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jaime Pardo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Percy Rios hit a great freekick 40 minutes into the match. After some fancy dribbling in the 41st minute, Hector Covarrubias managed to get in a good position for a shot. Paraguay's supporters rose to their feet, but Hector Covarrubias was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Trent Cuevas breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

After 51 minutes, Hector Covarrubias mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Paraguay and the FC Schalke 04 players grew even worse after the yellow card. After a rather tough play, Paraguay's Hector Covarrubias got a free kick in the 51st minute. After having played for 58 minutes, Kleanthis Kostakoglou managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. FC Schalke 04's supporters crossed their fingers, but Kleanthis Kostakoglou was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a rather tough play, Paraguay's Iker Tafalla got a free kick in the 62nd minute. After some careless play in the Paraguay defense, Kleanthis Kostakoglou kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Jacobo Nores. The Paraguay fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Jacobo Nores should have stopped the shot. Kleanthis Kostakoglou sent away a hard shot on goal in the 68th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Primitivo Escribano hit a great freekick 69 minutes into the match. In the 73rd minute, Neal Collins hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 77 minutes into the match, Kleanthis Kostakoglou had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Jacobo Nores. Paraguay's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Kleanthis Kostakoglou was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-2. František Spousta received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 85th minute. Jacobo Nores tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 89 played minutes Paraguay got a freekick which was hit by Ivan Prats. 91 minutes into the game, one of Paraguay:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. František Spousta shot the penalty kick right outside the post. The FC Schalke 04 players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
