In the 20th minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ronaldo Medeiros saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 23 minutes into the game, Bray McJon recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Julio Vera. Montevideo's supporters crossed their fingers, but Luisito Antequera was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. When the referee blew the final whistle, Montevideo could leave the field as winners, despite Ecuador having more of the ball for most of the match.
