In the 21stth minute of the game Leonides Ybarbo who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but USA's Marco Day was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. In the 23rd minute of the match Atletico Maturrango got a corner. USA's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Lucas Sardaneta ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Atletico Maturrango's Lucas Sardaneta to fire away a dangerous shot which Marco Day despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Monty Rogers in the 27th minute of play forced Atletico Maturrango's goalkeeper Weather Piedrahita to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. USA's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Atletico Maturrango the free kick. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.
