Edson Mendes hit a great freekick 16 minutes into the match. 18 minutes into the match, Ecuador's Daniel Zorita sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Leonel Cefero narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 25th minute the ball was on its way in behind Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Ecuador's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 2-2. Despite being the better team, Ecuador failed to find the winning goal and were forced to settle for a single point.
