Régis de Queirós showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Luca Zorita in the 7th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Alberto Tafalla in the 8th minute of play forced Palmeiras's goalkeeper Régis de Queirós to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 9 minutes into the match, Mexico's goal looked a bit too open when José Carlos Simões came free, but Dante Lacasa reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Régis de Queirós took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Joel Gaona, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 19th match minute, Mexico was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Luca Zorita to maneuver through the defense. Luke Clist could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 22nd minute of the match, but Dante Lacasa made a huge save. Luke Clists short, quick shot in the 22ndth minute got Dante Lacasa to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. Luca Zorita struck a weak shot in the 26th minute. Régis de Queirós didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Mexico. If Alberto Tafalla had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 28th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 34 minutes into the game, Iustin Bungeanu recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Dante Lacasa. Iustin Bungeanu showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-0. José Carlos Simões struck a weak shot in the 38th minute. Palmeiras's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Joel Gaona ran over to the corner to take the kick. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 1-0.
The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Bernt Jønsson to strike the kick off in the second half. When Waldemar Jacinto fell near the penalty area in the 53rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Palmeiras's protests and gave Waldemar Jacinto a yellow card for diving instead. After 53 played minutes Palmeiras got a freekick which was hit by Waldemar Jacinto. When Joel Gaona came up free with the goalie in the 54th minute, the Mexico fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Joel Gaona couldn't finish the play. Iustin Bungeanu took the ball and in the 57 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Dante Lacasa. Dante Lacasa dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-0. The corner went over the outstretched arms of Palmeiras's goalie and right to Luca Zorita. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. Palmeiras's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal.
