A collision led to Dep Colonia Avellaneda getting a freekick after 10 minutes play. Wei Li hit a great ball. Ecuador's Daniel Zorita suffered a concussion in the 12th minute, after a hard challenge, and had to leave the field. After 12 minutes, Mariano Silbestre mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Dep Colonia Avellaneda and the Ecuador players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 14th match minute, Dep Colonia Avellaneda was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Mariano Silbestre to maneuver through the defense. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cristian Sancho in the 17th minute of play forced Dep Colonia Avellaneda's goalkeeper Victoriano Bernaldo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of Dep Colonia Avellaneda booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 24 match minutes in a wonderful position. Luz Palacio didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 28th minute, Luz Palacio made a precise shot to the right of Victoriano Bernaldo. Dep Colonia Avellaneda's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-2. Victoriano Bernaldo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Luz Palacio in the 32nd minute of play. If Luz Palacio had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 43rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After the first half Ecuador were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Leopoldo Rosa stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. In the 54th minute, Ecuador's Cristian Sancho ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Victoriano Bernaldo. Victoriano Bernaldo yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-3. Victoriano Bernaldo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Sancho in the 57th minute of play. After 59 played minutes Dep Colonia Avellaneda got a freekick which was hit by Darryl Buckner. If Luz Palacio had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 64th minute. Dep Colonia Avellaneda's Claudio Cerritos was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Julio Vera in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Dep Colonia Avellaneda's Victoriano Bernaldo proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 80th minute of the match, managed to save Dep Colonia Avellaneda from getting a goal against them. Dep Colonia Avellaneda's defense didn't have a chance, in the 80th minute, when Luz Palacio scored to the left of an out of position Victoriano Bernaldo, making the score, 1-4. Luz Palacio struck a weak shot in the 82nd minute. Victoriano Bernaldo didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Ecuador. In the 91st minute, Claudio Cerritos hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 93rd minute Agustín Saelices shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Victoriano Bernaldo saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After having played for 95 minutes, Leopoldo Rosa managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Dep Colonia Avellaneda's supporters crossed their fingers, but Leopoldo Rosa was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Ecuador had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
