Stojko Živko dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. Stojko Živko stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Daniel Zorita's shot from short distance in the 13th minute. Tonko Grković struck a weak shot in the 14th minute. Julio Vera didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Maksimir. Daniel Zorita sent away a hard shot on goal in the 16th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. If Felix Montenegro had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 40th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After the first half Ecuador were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Daniel Zorita to make the kick off. Stojko Živko made an important save on a dangerous shot by Daniel Zorita in the 51st minute. 53 minutes into the match, Maksimir's goalkeeper Stojko Živko had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Daniel Zorita. In the 54th minute of the match, Daniel Zorita got a very nice opportunity to score, but Stojko Živko was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. The referee gave Dobriša Alić a yellow card, his second in the match, which meant he could no longer take part in the game. In the 71st minute, Dobriša Alić hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After having played for 73 minutes, Cristian Sancho managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Cristian Sancho was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Stojko Živko made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Sancho in the 80th minute of play. In the 89th minute, Cristian Sancho got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. When the final whistle sounded Ecuador left the ground with the victory after a much better performance than Maksimir.
