The supporters of Ecuador booed when Criciúma Esporte Clube was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 15 match minutes in a wonderful position. Daniel Zorita fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 31st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Evelio Antoniano having to interfere. Felix Montenegro's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Evelio Antoniano read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 35th minute of play. Criciúma Esporte Clube were awarded a corner in the 37th minute after Ecuador's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Paulo Laurentzi took the corner. Julio Vera made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Paulo Laurentzi in the 40th minute of play. Thanks to some nice moves Bieito Villaurreta could shoot a difficult shot in the 40th minute, which Julio Vera however easily saved by the left post. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Bieito Villaurreta, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Daniel Zorita to make the kick off.
