After 29 played minutes Costa Rica got a freekick which was hit by Eliseo Noboa. 33 minutes into the game, Marc Ahlstedt cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-0. Benito Sanz was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Benito Sanz showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Marcus Fogel, who was totally free with the ball in the 36th minute. Marcus Fogel received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Benito Sanz came out and tried to block the shot, but Marcus Fogel slotted it home off the left post making it 2-0 in the 37th minute. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.
