When Mariano Lacasa came up free with the goalie in the 15th minute, the Chile fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Mariano Lacasa couldn't finish the play. Ezequiel Candela made a fantastic save in the 16th minute, when Mariano Lacasa sent off a good shot on target. Chile's Thiago Pliego played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jose-Manuel Alabern in the 18th minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Mariano Lacasa got free with Ezequiel Candela in the 21st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 27th minute the ball was on its way in behind Chile's goalkeeper Thiago Pliego, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Gowland's attentive Teofilo Marquez managed to snatch the ball when Jose Manzanedo made a throw-in in the 29th minute of the game. In the 34th minute, Vladimir Madariaga hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Jose-Manuel Alabern struck a weak shot in the 38th minute. Thiago Pliego didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Gowland. Ezequiel Candela made an important save on a dangerous shot by Mariano Lacasa in the 41st minute. Ezequiel Candela made a fantastic save in the 43rd minute, when Mariano Lacasa sent off a good shot on target. After some careless play in the Chile defense, Jose-Manuel Alabern kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Thiago Pliego. The Chile fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Thiago Pliego should have stopped the shot.

If Mariano Lacasa had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 54th minute Mariano Lacasa shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ezequiel Candela saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 56 minutes into the match, Chile's goal looked a bit too open when Jose-Manuel Alabern came free, but Thiago Pliego reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Thiago Pliego made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Alfredo Fresnos in the 76th minute of play. Ezequiel Candela showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Mariano Lacasa, who was totally free with the ball in the 79th minute. When Guillermo Fontirroig fell near the penalty area in the 93rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Chile's protests and gave Guillermo Fontirroig a yellow card for diving instead. The Gowland supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Gowland would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
