But to his dismay, Joel Gaona quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. 12 minutes into the match, Mexico's Alberto Tafalla sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Fabio Abalos narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Fabio Abalos showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Lautaro Mancebo, who was totally free with the ball in the 13th minute. Dante Lacasa stood somewhat misplaced when Panait Oprea came free in front of goal and shot 1-1 to the left of him in the 20 minute. Fabio Abalos showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Lautaro Mancebo in the 23rd minute of the match. Mexico's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Joel Gaona in the 24th minute. Luca Rouco was in a good position and managed to take a shot, but he missed just to the outside of the post. 29 minutes into the match, ionion's goal looked a bit too open when Joel Gaona came free, but Fabio Abalos reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Joel Gaona in the 30th minute of play forced ionion's goalkeeper Fabio Abalos to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 31st minute Mexico were awarded a corner. Joel Gaona went to the cornerflag to take it. In the 33rd minute, Taner Zübeyr hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. ionion's Fabio Abalos played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Joel Gaona in the 34th minute of play. After a defensive mix-up in ionion's zone, Lautaro Mancebo stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Fabio Abalos came out of the goal and Lautaro Mancebo tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 44th minute, Alberto Tafalla ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Fabio Abalos was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-3. After the first half Mexico were leading 1-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

In the 50th minute, Lorenzo Cazalla hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 52nd minute Ştefan Isvoreanu shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dante Lacasa saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Lautaro Mancebo could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 55th minute of the match, but Fabio Abalos made a huge save. Fabio Abalos made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Joel Gaona in the 57th minute of play. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Fabio Abalos, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. Ştefan Isvoreanu took the ball and in the 73 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Dante Lacasa. Dante Lacasa dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-3. A collision led to ionion getting a freekick after 75 minutes play. Grigore Pădure hit a great ball. In the 77th minute Joel Gaona shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fabio Abalos saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Mexico were awarded a corner in the 78th minute after ionion's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Joel Gaona took the corner. With an all-out effort, Mexico's Fabio Abalos threw himself towards the right post 85 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Joel Gaona, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Dante Lacasa showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Ştefan Isvoreanu in the 91st minute of the match.
