The audience thought a goal was coming when Armando Meireles got free with Julio Vera in the 14th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Petruț Dicu took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

After a defensive mix-up in Ecuador's zone, Toro Lindø stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Julio Vera came out of the goal and Toro Lindø tried to chip the ball over his head. Ecuador's Julio Vera tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 73rd minute, Luis Andino ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Petruț Dicu was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-2.
