Donato Venerando blasted a shot towards the goal in the 2nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Thiago Pliego having to make a save. The audience thought a goal was coming when Donato Venerando got free with Thiago Pliego in the 4th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. If Jimeno Abastas had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 8th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The supporters of Ardiles booed when Chile was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 9 match minutes in a wonderful position. Orlando Casaus didn't get a good kick on the ball. The audience was convinced that Donato Venerando's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Thiago Pliego was relentless in the 12th minute of the game. Mariano Lacasa's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Erik Kassentoft read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 15th minute of play. In the 17th minute, Indiana Jones hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After a rather tough play, Chile's Gerardo Pozo got a free kick in the 21st minute. Thiago Pliego took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Felipe Nuno, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After some careless play in the Ardiles defense, Mariano Lacasa kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Erik Kassentoft. The Ardiles fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Erik Kassentoft should have stopped the shot. 33 minutes into the match, Chile's Mariano Lacasa sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Erik Kassentoft narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 36th minute of the match Ardiles got a corner. Chile's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Felipe Nuno ran over to the corner to take the kick. Mariano Lacasa's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Erik Kassentoft read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 40th minute of play. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

After 53 minutes of play, Chile's Mariano Lacasa made it 0-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Erik Kassentoft was left in no man's land by his defense there! In the 58th minute, Mariano Lacasa ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Erik Kassentoft was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-3. Ardiles's Erik Kassentoft played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Mariano Lacasa in the 63rd minute of play. 64 minutes into the match, Chile's Mariano Lacasa sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Erik Kassentoft narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Erik Kassentoft showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Mariano Lacasa in the 68th minute of the match. Mariano Lacasa's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Erik Kassentoft read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 70th minute of play. Mariano Lacasa came free with the goalkeeper in the 71st minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Erik Kassentoft could save by the left post. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Mariano Lacasa in the 72nd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Erik Kassentoft prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 75th minute, Mariano Lacasa ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Erik Kassentoft was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-4. Mariano Lacasa could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 77th minute of the match, but Erik Kassentoft made a huge save. The referee felt a red card was in order, 79 minutes into the game, when Felipe Nuno put in a rough tackle. 84 minutes into the match, Mariano Lacasa had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Erik Kassentoft. Ardiles's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Mariano Lacasa was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-5. Mariano Lacasa who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 87thth minute tested the skills of Erik Kassentoft when he managed to save the team from getting behind. When the match clock showed 88 minutes, the score became 0-6 when Mariano Lacasa sped through Ardiles's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Erik Kassentoft.
