The Ecuador fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Julio Vera should have stopped the shot. 41 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when La Baguet came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 42nd match minute, Ecuador was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Primitivo Andino to maneuver through the defense. Primitivo Andino got a throw-in 45 minutes in the game and the ball was received by Felix Montenegro. Christer Vig made an important save on a dangerous shot by Daniel Zorita in the 48th minute. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 1-1 after a close first half.
