Dé Mello took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 6th minute the ball was on its way in behind Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Julio Vera made an important save on a dangerous shot by Peter Mpenza in the 10th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Agustín Saelices in the 20th minute of play forced Canarinho Atordoado's goalkeeper Dé Mello to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 38th minute Canarinho Atordoado were awarded a corner. Peter Mpenza went to the cornerflag to take it. A nice corner shot did that Stayko Gorbanov got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Julio Vera quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Luiz Leo struck a weak shot in the 39th minute. Julio Vera didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Canarinho Atordoado. Peter Mpenza's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 43rdth minute, Julio Vera skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Daniel Zorita might have been able to make a better finish in the 46th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Dé Mello. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Daniel Zorita ran back to his position shaking his head. Márcio Seabra hit a great freekick 47 minutes into the match. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 2-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Luiz Leo made a kick off. When Camilo Gisbert fell near the penalty area in the 51st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Ecuador's protests and gave Camilo Gisbert a yellow card for diving instead. After 50 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Ecuador! Daniel Zorita's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Dé Mello read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 53rd minute of play. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Peter Mpenza in the 65th minute of play. Dé Mello made an important save on a dangerous shot by Agustín Saelices in the 67th minute. 69 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Peter Mpenza came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cristian Sancho got free with Dé Mello in the 73rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Peter Mpenza in the 79th minute of play. The audience was convinced that Luiz Leo's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Julio Vera was relentless in the 80th minute of the game. In the 83rd minute, Cristian Sancho got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. After 92 minutes, Peter Mpenza mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Canarinho Atordoado and the Ecuador players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 94th match minute, Canarinho Atordoado was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Peter Mpenza to maneuver through the defense. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Luiz Leo in the 96th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Julio Vera prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 98th minute of the match Canarinho Atordoado got a corner. Ecuador's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Peter Mpenza ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Canarinho Atordoado's Peter Mpenza to fire away a dangerous shot which Julio Vera despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Ecuador's supporters were dissatisfied at the end of the match because Canarinho Atordoado had won, even though Ecuador had held more of the ball.
