The supporters of Ecuador booed when Sport Club Mavericks was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 13 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sílvio Luiz de Godoi didn't get a good kick on the ball. Zézinho Lopez's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Julio Vera read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 15th minute of play. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 18th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 20 minutes into the match, Sport Club Mavericks's goalkeeper Marcelo Gröhe had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Cristian Sancho. Sport Club Mavericks's İslam Tunçbilek managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Primitivo Andino in the 29 minute of the game. In the 30th minute the ball was on its way in behind Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Cristian Sancho recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 33rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Sport Club Mavericks's Marcelo Gröhe proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 34th minute of the match, managed to save Sport Club Mavericks from getting a goal against them. In the 35th minute Ecuador were awarded a corner. Daniel Zorita went to the cornerflag to take it. 43 minutes into the match, Sport Club Mavericks's Dre Schipmans sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Julio Vera narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

Sport Club Mavericks made a substitution. Arnaldo Baiano replaced Marcus Pinho. Sport Club Mavericks's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. Sport Club Mavericks's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Ecuador the free kick.
