Mai Yao Yao took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ciro Tab in the 33rd minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Luis Andino fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 34th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mai Yao Yao having to interfere. In the 37th minute Javier Beti shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpected shot in the 39th minute by Theagenis Papageorgiou got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. A collision led to Fracasados getting a freekick after 40 minutes play. Isidro Maidana hit a great ball. Mai Yao Yao showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Daniel Zorita in the 44th minute of the match. In the 45th minute, Daniel Zorita got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The supporters of Ecuador booed when Fracasados was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 46 match minutes in a wonderful position. Theagenis Papageorgiou didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

After some fancy dribbling in the 61st minute, Cristian Sancho managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ecuador's supporters rose to their feet, but Cristian Sancho was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Mai Yao Yao breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The crowd rose to their feet as Ecuador's Daniel Zorita slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Mai Yao Yao. That made the score 0-1 after 77 minutes of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cristian Sancho got free with Mai Yao Yao in the 81st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort.
