Martin Palermo F.C.'s supporters crossed their fingers, but Serafin Manni was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 41 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Guillermo Izquierdo. In the 48th minute Giovanni Arósio shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.

Ecuador's Cristian Sancho got a good chance for a goal in the 53rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The supporters of Ecuador booed when Martin Palermo F.C. was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 66 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mateo Izquierdo didn't get a good kick on the ball. Ecuador's Daniel Zorita shoveled away a really nice long shot in the 67th minute of play. The shot was stopped by Silvio Bazil but with some difficulty. Cristian Sancho struck a weak shot in the 80th minute. Silvio Bazil didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Ecuador. After some fancy dribbling in the 84th minute, Sebastián Izquierdo managed to get in a good position for a shot. Martin Palermo F.C.'s supporters rose to their feet, but Sebastián Izquierdo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Julio Vera breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
