Benito Sanz made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 3-0. Leonardo Severo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 22nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Benito Sanz having to interfere. Hauk Thuen took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Eliseo Noboa, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 25 minutes into the match, Costa Rica's goal looked a bit too open when Jovanie Cabral came free, but Benito Sanz reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gorka Mendieta in the 29th minute of play forced Costa Rica's goalkeeper Benito Sanz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Costa Rica's Benito Sanz played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jovanie Cabral in the 82nd minute of play.
