A collision led to Ecuador getting a freekick after 44 minutes play. Felix Montes hit a great ball. Osvaldo Bernat received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 46th minute. Julio Vera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After the first half Ecuador were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The wind increased when Gerardo Beltran made the kick off in the second half.
