The audience thought a goal was coming when Alexander Murillo got free with Julio Vera in the 19th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Fabio Muñoz showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Luis Andino in the 23rd minute of the match. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Alexander Murillo to make the kick off. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. A collision led to DÏVÄLÄ getting a freekick after 55 minutes play. Diómedes Sánchez hit a great ball. Fabio Muñoz took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Luis Andino, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 59 minutes into the match, Ecuador's goal looked a bit too open when Fritz Lonning came free, but Julio Vera reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. If Daniel Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 62nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Felix Montenegro took the ball and in the 65 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Fabio Muñoz. Fabio Muñoz dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. After having played for 72 minutes, Alexander Murillo managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. DÏVÄLÄ's supporters crossed their fingers, but Alexander Murillo was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The corner led Ecuador's Juan Sebastián Puig to fire away a dangerous shot which Fabio Muñoz despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball.
