An unexpectedly hard shot by Felix Montenegro in the 39th minute of play forced Sporting Clube de Gaya's goalkeeper Renato Vargas to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. With a little luck, Ecuador's Julio Vera got control of the ball when Fredy Montero tried to sneak it across the goal line. Julio Vera made a fantastic save in the 41st minute, when Fredy Montero sent off a good shot on target. Julio Vera showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Lucílio Figueiras in the 45th minute of the match. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.
