União São José FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Gernando Félix was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Gernando Félix could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 16th minute of the match, but Benito Sanz made a huge save. After 19 played minutes União São José FC got a freekick which was hit by Fabiano de Sena. 21 minutes into the game, Lautaro Puig was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Costa Rica's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave União São José FC the free kick. In the 21st minute, Lautaro Puig hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 28th match minute, União São José FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Marco de Salles to maneuver through the defense. Glauco Botelho could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 35th minute of the match, but Benito Sanz made a huge save. In the 40th minute of the match Marco de Salles sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Benito Sanz skillfully saved the ball. In the 44th minute of the match Hugo Ferrant shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Lauro da Silveira showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

Marco de Salles took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 64th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Benito Sanz. Costa Rica's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. The supporters of União São José FC booed when Costa Rica was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 65 match minutes in a wonderful position. Alan Moruga didn't get a good kick on the ball.
