Dante Lacasa showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Borja Camerin, who was totally free with the ball in the 26th minute. In the 41st minute, Lorenzo Cazalla hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Niels Lindhard recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 42nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Joel Gaona in the 46th minute of play forced barcelona de guayaquil's goalkeeper Kajetan Smolarek to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 48th minute Joel Gaona shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Kajetan Smolarek saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Kajetan Smolarek came out of the goal in the 48th minute to try and stop a shot by Mexico's Joel Gaona. But to his dismay, Joel Gaona quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Isaltino Carneiro stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After 55 minutes, Luca Zorita mouthed his way into the referee's book.
