Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by David Coutinho in the 11th minute of play. With a little luck, Ecuador's Julio Vera got control of the ball when David Coutinho tried to sneak it across the goal line. When the match had gone on for 16 minutes, Cristian Sancho put it in 0-1 from a short distance just to the right of Emerson Leão. Emerson Leão made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 19th minute of play. 20 minutes into the match, David Coutinho notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of Ecuador's Julio Vera. Julio Vera was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. David Coutinho received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 43rd minute. Julio Vera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-1.

The wind increased when Daniel Zorita made the kick off in the second half. The audience thought a goal was coming when Daniel Zorita got free with Emerson Leão in the 77th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from David Coutinho, who was totally free with the ball in the 84th minute.
