Percy Fernandez dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. 15 minutes into the match, Peru's Julian Murillo sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Percy Fernandez narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Percy Fernandez made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Julian Murillo in the 21st minute of play. If Julian Murillo had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 24th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 27th minute, Pablo Lampard ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Rolando Noboa was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-1. In the 30th minute Julian Murillo shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Percy Fernandez saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The coaching staff of Sport Clube Recife protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Geovani Medeiros had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

52 minutes into the game, Julian Murillo cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-2. Percy Fernandez was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Percy Fernandez made a fantastic save in the 59th minute, when Emmanuel Reyes sent off a good shot on target. 60 minutes into the match, Sport Clube Recife's goalkeeper Percy Fernandez had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Julian Murillo. Sport Clube Recife's Percy Fernandez proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 63rd minute of the match, managed to save Sport Clube Recife from getting a goal against them. Sport Clube Recife's Percy Fernandez played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Julian Murillo in the 68th minute of play. In the 70th match minute, Peru was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Joaquin Prats to maneuver through the defense. When Dong Yang Bang came up free with the goalie in the 71st minute, the Sport Clube Recife fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Dong Yang Bang couldn't finish the play. Sport Clube Recife made a substitution. Sport Clube Recife's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Luz Tejedor ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Peru's Luz Tejedor to fire away a dangerous shot which Percy Fernandez despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. With a little luck, Sport Clube Recife's Percy Fernandez got control of the ball when Julian Murillo tried to sneak it across the goal line. Gualter Penha sent away a hard shot on goal in the 86th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Peru's Eliseo Alcocer was substituted for Moises Gayoso. Peru's Rafael Gallo was substituted for Julian Murillo. After 94 minutes of play, Peru's Rafael Gallo made it 1-3 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Percy Fernandez was left in no man's land by his defense there! The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Peru walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
