After having played for 20 minutes, Eliseo Mina managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Peru's supporters crossed their fingers, but Eliseo Mina was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Henning Strömqvist hit a great freekick 40 minutes into the match. Luz Tejedor was slow to take the kick. During this time Peru's players had a chance to rest. A nice corner shot did that Milagros Fraga got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Brendan Leblanc quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. In the 46th minute, Joaquin Prats hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Rickard Lundgren to strike the kick off in the second half. The audience was convinced that Guo Ke Peng's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Rolando Noboa was relentless in the 52nd minute of the game.
