The Ecuador fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Julio Vera should have stopped the shot. Daniel Zorita struck a weak shot in the 16th minute. Erim Beşer didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Ecuador. Erim Beşer made an important save on a dangerous shot by Felix Montenegro in the 17th minute. Daniel Zorita came free with the goalkeeper in the 22nd minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Erim Beşer could save by the left post. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Andor Szűcs in the 25th minute of play. A collision led to MR7 getting a freekick after 30 minutes play. Reşit Şahvar hit a great ball. Erim Beşer stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Luis Andino's shot from short distance in the 31st minute. Julio Vera showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Andor Szűcs, who was totally free with the ball in the 33rd minute. Agustín Saelices hit a great freekick 34 minutes into the match. If Benito Raphael had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 35th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Benito Raphael blasted a shot towards the goal in the 40th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Julio Vera having to make a save. Erim Beşer made an important save on a dangerous shot by Daniel Zorita in the 44th minute. 44 minutes into the game, Daniel Zorita recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Erim Beşer. Daniel Zorita showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-1. When Daniel Zorita came up free with the goalie in the 47th minute, the Ecuador fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Daniel Zorita couldn't finish the play. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Daniel Zorita was the one to do the kick off. After having played for 52 minutes, Luis Andino managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Luis Andino was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. With his leg Julio Vera managed to avoid a goal in the 55thth minute, when MR7's Andor Szűcs fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Erim Beşer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Sancho in the 57th minute of play. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Karl-Michael Fredriksson in the 59th minute of play. Ecuador's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Daniel Zorita in the 63rd minute. The goalkeeper smacked the ball away after a great corner, but Luis Andino advanced and headed the ball into goal, 2-1 in the 63rd minute. If Cristian Sancho had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 71st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Karl-Michael Fredriksson could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 76th minute of the match, but Julio Vera made a huge save. In the 94th minute Benito Raphael shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.
