Wilfred Fleming's late challenge caught a Venezuela's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. One of Sport Lisboa e Benfica:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Venezuela:s goal. Gayle Darling went to the wrong direction when Tomas Illescas was taking care of the penalty kick which however missed the goal. After 13 minutes, Eusebio Briggs mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Sport Lisboa e Benfica and the Venezuela players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 13 played minutes Sport Lisboa e Benfica got a freekick which was hit by Eusebio Briggs. Tomas Illescas kicked well hit freekick during the 28th minute of the match. The throw-in from Salvador Gisbert in the 31st minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Sport Lisboa e Benfica's Georges Christopher. Gayle Darling made a fantastic save in the 35th minute, when Tomas Illescas sent off a good shot on target. Tomas Illescas's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Gayle Darling read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 38th minute of play. Patricio Costa recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 39th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Tomas Illescas to make the kick off. Gayle Darling made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Tomas Illescas in the 52nd minute of play. The crowd rose to their feet as Sport Lisboa e Benfica's Florentin McCann slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Jonathan Ferrant. That made the score 1-1 after 56 minutes of play. After a rather tough play, Venezuela's Jonathan Venegas got a free kick in the 60th minute. Patricio Costa recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 66th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 76 minutes into the match, Sport Lisboa e Benfica's goal looked a bit too open when Tomas Illescas came free, but Gayle Darling reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 79th minute, Patricio Costa ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Gayle Darling was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-1. 84 minutes into the match, Tomas Illescas notched a goal, 3-1, to the right of Sport Lisboa e Benfica's Gayle Darling. Gayle Darling was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. A collision led to Venezuela getting a freekick after 87 minutes play. Patricio Costa hit a great ball. The supporters of Venezuela booed when Sport Lisboa e Benfica was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 89 match minutes in a wonderful position.
