Tadeo Jakobe took the ball and in the 18 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Rolando Noboa. Rolando Noboa dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. An unexpectedly hard shot by Julian Murillo in the 24th minute of play forced Newell´s's goalkeeper Cristobal Estavan to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A collision led to Peru getting a freekick after 25 minutes play. Efraim Gilabert hit a great ball. 29 minutes had been played when some careless play by Newell´s's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Luz Tejedor was slow to take the kick. During this time Peru's players had a chance to rest. Julian Murillo's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Cristobal Estavan read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 33rd minute of play. A collision led to Newell´s getting a freekick after 34 minutes play. Faustino Maura hit a great ball. Cristobal Estavan took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Julian Murillo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Newell´s's Cristobal Estavan proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 43rd minute of the match, managed to save Newell´s from getting a goal against them. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Amancio Bilintx to make the kick off. Eliseo Mina received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 51st minute. Cristobal Estavan tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. With a little luck, Peru's Rolando Noboa got control of the ball when Omar Cordara tried to sneak it across the goal line. Peru's Eliseo Mina quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Fernan Crescencio, made in the 57th minute of the game. Omar Cordara fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 60th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rolando Noboa having to interfere. Eliseo Mina struck a weak shot in the 70th minute. Cristobal Estavan didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Peru. 73 minutes into the match, Peru's goal looked a bit too open when Amancio Bilintx came free, but Rolando Noboa reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Amancio Bilintx in the 75th minute of play forced Peru's goalkeeper Rolando Noboa to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 79th minute Omar Cordara shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rolando Noboa saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Newell´s's Cristobal Estavan played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Julian Murillo in the 81st minute of play. Peru made a substitution. Rafael Gallo replaced Julian Murillo. Peru's Antonio Tenorio was substituted for Luz Tejedor. Isidoro Ramires kicked well hit freekick during the 84th minute of the match. Cristobal Estavan took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Rafael Gallo, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Fernan Crescencio made in the 88th minute of the game a throw-in that took a bad bounce and was taken care of by Peru's Eliseo Mina. Fernan Crescencio made in the 89th minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Indiana Turban. 91 minutes into the game, Isidoro Ramires was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Newell´s's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Peru the free kick. The supporters of Peru booed when Newell´s was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 92 match minutes in a wonderful position. Isidoro Ramires didn't get a good kick on the ball. Eliseo Mina took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 92nd minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Cristobal Estavan. Newell´s's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. Omar Cordara received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 94th minute. Rolando Noboa tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The Newell´s supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Newell´s would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
