The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Melchor Napier the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of Vélez Juniors protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Melchor Napier had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. Elpidio Vitin had in the 5thth minute some difficulties stopping Luz Tejedor's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his right side, but he still managed to hold the ball 5 minutes into the game, Luz Tejedor recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Elpidio Vitin. Luz Tejedor showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-0. Vélez Juniors's Elpidio Vitin played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Julian Murillo in the 9th minute of play. Rolando Noboa made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Naike in the 14th minute of play. Milagros Fraga recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 16th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Julian Murillo who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 18thth minute tested the skills of Elpidio Vitin when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Peru were awarded a corner in the 19th minute after Vélez Juniors's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Luz Tejedor took the corner. A nice corner shot did that Luz Tejedor got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Elpidio Vitin quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. Rolando Noboa made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Naike in the 22nd minute of play. Elpidio Vitin took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Luz Tejedor, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After a defensive mix-up in Vélez Juniors's zone, Eliseo Mina stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Elpidio Vitin came out of the goal and Eliseo Mina tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Nicolas Roland kicked well hit freekick during the 32nd minute of the match. Elpidio Vitin made a fantastic save in the 36th minute, when Julian Murillo sent off a good shot on target. In the 41st minute, Nicolas Roland hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. An unexpectedly hard shot by Luz Tejedor in the 41st minute of play forced Vélez Juniors's goalkeeper Elpidio Vitin to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Elpidio Vitin made an important save on a dangerous shot by Julian Murillo in the 44th minute. The supporters of Peru booed when Vélez Juniors was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 45 match minutes in a wonderful position. Santos Fonda didn't get a good kick on the ball. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Julian Murillo to strike the kick off in the second half. Elpidio Vitin showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Eliseo Mina in the 62nd minute of the match. Peru's supporters were highly satisfied with the result. They cheered their team of the pitch, having watched them win a very even match.
