In the 21st minute Felix Montenegro shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Olavo Linares saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 23 minutes into the match, Luis Andino had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Olavo Linares. Joinville S.German-FSCMZ's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Luis Andino was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-3. Olavo Linares showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Daniel Zorita, who was totally free with the ball in the 27th minute. With a little luck, Ecuador's Julio Vera got control of the ball when Sandro Aguiar tried to sneak it across the goal line. Olavo Linares took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Luis Andino hit a great freekick 34 minutes into the match. Stacey Crowe kicked well hit freekick during the 41st minute of the match. The supporters of Joinville S.German-FSCMZ booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 44 match minutes in a wonderful position. Juan Sebastián Puig didn't get a good kick on the ball. Julio Vera acted impressively in front of the goal and made a superb save when he, in the 45th minute, took the ball on the long shot from Sandro Aguiar. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-3 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Daniel Zorita to make the kick off. Julio Vera breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
