Nery Pumpido showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Joel Gaona in the 29th minute of the match. Mexico were awarded a corner in the 31th minute after GuateFortín's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Joel Gaona took the corner. Macos Graciani was in a good position and managed to take a shot, but he missed just to the outside of the post. Mexico's Dante Lacasa proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 33rd minute of the match, managed to save Mexico from getting a goal against them. 34 minutes into the game, Mexico's Lautaro Mancebo nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Nery Pumpido made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Thierry Henry stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Nery Pumpido dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-2. An unexpectedly hard shot by Thierry Henry in the 81st minute of play forced Mexico's goalkeeper Dante Lacasa to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Dante Lacasa took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from William Villanueva, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 87 minutes into the match, GuateFortín's goalkeeper Nery Pumpido had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Luca Zorita.
