Carlisle United's supporters crossed their fingers, but 洪振义 was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 14 minutes into the match, 洪振义 dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Joaquin Gayoso, 1-0. Joaquin Gayoso showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from 洪振义 in the 17th minute of the match. In the 21st minute 洪振义 shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Joaquin Gayoso saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 25 played minutes Carlisle United got a freekick which was hit by 张学友 楚城. After 26 minutes, Sol Leyburn mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Carlisle United and the Uruguay players grew even worse after the yellow card. Francisco Seco struck a weak shot in the 27th minute. Mehmet Hakkı Oğuzkan didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Uruguay. Carlisle United's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. In the 41st minute, Andreas Forsberg hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. When Thomas Winfield fell near the penalty area in the 43rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Carlisle United's protests and gave Thomas Winfield a yellow card for diving instead. In the 47th minute, Alberto Gisbert hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Francisco Seco to make the kick off. The audience thought a goal was coming when Francisco Seco got free with Mehmet Hakkı Oğuzkan in the 55th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. 58 minutes into the match, Carlisle United's goalkeeper Mehmet Hakkı Oğuzkan had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Francisco Seco. After a defensive mix-up in Uruguay's zone, Thomas Winfield stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Joaquin Gayoso came out of the goal and Thomas Winfield tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 78th minute Maximiliano Escribano shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Mehmet Hakkı Oğuzkan saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 洪振义 received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 80th minute. Joaquin Gayoso tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Francisco Seco fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 81st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mehmet Hakkı Oğuzkan having to interfere. Maximiliano Escribano sent away a hard shot on goal in the 85th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Mehmet Hakkı Oğuzkan made a fantastic save in the 87th minute, when Francisco Seco sent off a good shot on target. Uruguay's Maximiliano Escribano got a good chance for a goal in the 89th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 92 minutes into the match, Carlisle United's 洪振义 sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Joaquin Gayoso narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 94th match minute, Uruguay was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Jorge Sainz to maneuver through the defense. Carlisle United's Mehmet Hakkı Oğuzkan played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alberto Gisbert in the 97th minute of play. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Carlisle United fans cheered their team off the field, for while Uruguay had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
