In the 15th minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ronaldo Medeiros saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 17 minutes into the match, Montevideo's goal looked a bit too open when Daniel Zorita came free, but Ronaldo Medeiros reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Ronaldo Medeiros showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Daniel Zorita, who was totally free with the ball in the 21st minute. Ronaldo Medeiros took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Daniel Zorita, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Ecuador's Julio Vera proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 25th minute of the match, managed to save Ecuador from getting a goal against them. 27 minutes into the match, Montevideo's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Sancho came free, but Ronaldo Medeiros reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Ronaldo Medeiros made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cristian Sancho in the 28th minute of play. Cristian Sancho scored 1-2 in the 28th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Ronaldo Medeiros, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Ronaldo Medeiros didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Agustín Saelices went, in the 36th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-3 was the resulting score. After a rather tough play, Montevideo's Olavo Matorin got a free kick in the 38th minute. If Bray McJon had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 40th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Mário Maranhense during the 42nd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Mário Maranhense kicked well hit freekick during the 42nd minute of the match. After having played for 48 minutes, Cristian Sancho managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ecuador's supporters crossed their fingers, but Cristian Sancho was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-3 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Daniel Zorita was the one to do the kick off. In the 53rd minute Cristian Sancho shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ronaldo Medeiros saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Cristian Sancho could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 57th minute of the match, but Ronaldo Medeiros made a huge save. In the 60th minute the ball was on its way in behind Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. In the 60th minute, Luisito Antequera left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Montevideo fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 2-3. Luisito Antequera's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Julio Vera read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 63rd minute of play. Ronaldo Medeiros showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Cristian Sancho in the 64th minute of the match. Juan Sebastián Puig hit a great freekick 66 minutes into the match. Luisito Antequera sent away a hard shot on goal in the 70th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Luisito Antequera in the 72nd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Julio Vera saved Ecuador from getting behind. In the 77th minute Ecuador were awarded a corner. Daniel Zorita went to the cornerflag to take it. A collision led to Ecuador getting a freekick after 77 minutes play. Camilo Gisbert hit a great ball. After 81 played minutes Ecuador got a freekick which was hit by Felix Montes. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Olavo Matorin, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 84 minutes Ecuador's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Wilson Fernandez who took care of the corner kick. If Olavo Matorin had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 87th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Julio Vera made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Olavo Matorin in the 89th minute of play. The supporters of Montevideo booed when Ecuador was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 93 match minutes in a wonderful position. Antonio Arias didn't get a good kick on the ball. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Ecuador walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
