After 52 played minutes Ecuador got a freekick which was hit by Daniel Zorita. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Joachim Österlund, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Ecuador's supporters rose to their feet, but Daniel Zorita was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Chiquinho Romero breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The crowd rose to their feet as Arnold Stark kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Julio Vera. That made the score 0-1 in the 93 minute of play. When the referee blew the final whistle jeers and boos were heard from the home team's supporters. They were angered to see Ecuador lose a match they had controlled from the kick-off.
