Dante Lacasa made a fantastic save in the 6th minute, when Armando Meireles sent off a good shot on target. Petruț Dicu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Alberto Tafalla, who was totally free with the ball in the 13th minute. After 40 minutes, Toro Lindø mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Exército Português and the Mexico players grew even worse after the yellow card. After a rather tough play, Exército Português's Toro Lindø got a free kick in the 40th minute. Alberto Tafalla recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 41st minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 47 minutes into the match, Joel Gaona notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of Exército Português's Petruț Dicu. Petruț Dicu was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Joel Gaona to strike the kick off in the second half. In the 52nd minute Bruno Soveral shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dante Lacasa saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 53 minutes Mexico's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Gustavo Carrasqueira who took care of the corner kick. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Facundo Cadaval in the 58th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Petruț Dicu prevented the ball from getting in the gole. The supporters of Mexico booed when Exército Português was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 59 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ademar Borges didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Alberto Tafalla in the 60th minute of play forced Exército Português's goalkeeper Petruț Dicu to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Joel Gaona struck a weak shot in the 62nd minute. Petruț Dicu didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Mexico. Dante Lacasa made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Bruno Soveral in the 64th minute of play. After having played for 68 minutes, Joel Gaona managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Mexico's supporters crossed their fingers, but Joel Gaona was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 70th minute Facundo Cadaval shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Petruț Dicu saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. If Luca Zorita had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 72nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Alberto Tafalla kicked well hit freekick during the 75th minute of the match. Luca Zorita recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 77th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Alberto Tafalla fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 79th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Petruț Dicu having to interfere. Petruț Dicu showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Facundo Cadaval in the 88th minute of the match. Toro Lindø got his second yellow card in the match during the 89th minute which meant that he had to leave the ground. After 89 played minutes Exército Português got a freekick which was hit by Toro Lindø. 94 minutes into the match, Alberto Tafalla notched a goal, 1-2, to the right of Exército Português's Petruț Dicu. Petruț Dicu was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Exército Português's Feliks Maurycy was substituted for Armando Meireles. The Mexico supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Mexico would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
