But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Håkan Kjellman couldn't finish the play. 11 minutes into the match, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's goal looked a bit too open when Cristian Sancho came free, but Zafer Hürsel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 14th minute, Emanuel Emander fired away a shot on goal. He put a little to much spin on the ball and sent it just wide of the right post. Ecuador's Daniel Zorita got a good chance for a goal in the 18th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Daniel Zorita in the 25th minute of play forced FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's goalkeeper Zafer Hürsel to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of Ecuador booed when FC Zenit Saint Petersburg was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 25 match minutes in a wonderful position. Peter Snell didn't get a good kick on the ball. 28 minutes into the match, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's goal looked a bit too open when Daniel Zorita came free, but Zafer Hürsel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 28 minutes into the game, Ecuador's Daniel Zorita nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's Zafer Hürsel played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristian Sancho in the 39th minute of play. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-1.

The wind increased when Daniel Zorita made the kick off in the second half. Through an outstanding action, after 52 minutes, Zafer Hürsel successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. In the 59th minute Emanuel Emander shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Julio Vera saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Johannes Botvidsson recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 61st minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 62 minutes into the match, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's goal looked a bit too open when Daniel Zorita came free, but Zafer Hürsel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Luis Andino was in a good position and managed to take a shot, but he missed just to the outside of the post. Ecuador's Cristian Sancho got a good chance for a goal in the 69th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After 72 played minutes FC Zenit Saint Petersburg got a freekick which was hit by Håkan Kjellman. FC Zenit Saint Petersburg made a substitution. Valentin Ivarsson replaced Emanuel Emander. In the 73rd match minute, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Håkan Kjellman to maneuver through the defense. The crowd rose to their feet as Ecuador's Daniel Zorita slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Zafer Hürsel. That made the score 2-2 after 74 minutes of play. Daniel Zorita struck a weak shot in the 77th minute. Zafer Hürsel didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Ecuador. After a defensive mix-up in Ecuador's zone, Valentin Ivarsson stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Julio Vera came out of the goal and Valentin Ivarsson tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Julio Vera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Valentin Ivarsson, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's Johannes Botvidsson couldn't find anyone to pass the ball to, so he shot a long shot towards the goal in the 93rd minute. The shot went wide which resulted in a goal kick for Ecuador. Ecuador were unable to convert their possession into goals, allowing FC Zenit Saint Petersburg to leave the ground with a draw.
