The audience thought a goal was coming when Golo Phoenix got free with Jonathan Ferrant in the 23rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Jonathan Ferrant made an important save on a dangerous shot by Golo Phoenix in the 28th minute. After a defensive mix-up in PHOENIX Cluj-Napoca's zone, Patricio Costa stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Dacian Ghițescu came out of the goal and Patricio Costa tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The ball went over the crossbar instead. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Tomas Illescas to make the kick off. Patricio Costa sent away a hard shot on goal in the 54th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Tomas Illescas struck a weak shot in the 58th minute. Dacian Ghițescu didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Venezuela.
