The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 72nd minute of the game. One of La Scaloneta:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Ecuador:s goal. Luis Andino sent away a hard shot on goal in the 76th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Cristian Sancho could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 78th minute of the match, but Dibag Martinez made a huge save. 79 minutes into the game, Ecuador's Daniel Zorita nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Dibag Martinez made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-2. An unexpectedly hard shot by Julián Álvarez in the 85th minute of play forced Ecuador's goalkeeper Julio Vera to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When the final whistle sounded Ecuador left the ground with the victory after a much better performance than La Scaloneta.
