In the 8th minute Daniel Zorita shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Farid Mondragón saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Ecuador's Julio Vera played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Kerry Sellers in the 14th minute of play. Farid Mondragón made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Daniel Zorita in the 19th minute of play. In the 24th minute, Sid Chadwick hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Farid Mondragón showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Daniel Zorita, who was totally free with the ball in the 25th minute. Alfredo Felder replaced Sidney Forbes. Agustín Saelices hit a great freekick 91 minutes into the match. The C. A. Independiente players were eager to celebrate when the final whistle sounded. They had somehow managed to win, even though the away team had held the majority of the possession.
