In the 46th minute Joel Gaona shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Michel van der Bij saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 46 minutes of play, Mexico's Joel Gaona made it 0-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Michel van der Bij was left in no man's land by his defense there! The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

Michel van der Bij made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Luca Zorita in the 54th minute of play. Alberto Tafalla could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 56th minute of the match, but Michel van der Bij made a huge save. Lautaro Mancebo came free with the goalkeeper in the 61st minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Michel van der Bij could save by the left post.
